Kel McGowan is Kelligrafie
While searching through the internet I came across something that completely. Blew. My. Mind. Shaggy from Scooby Doo's real name isn't Shaggy. I know that should be obvious. I mean, who names their kid 'Shaggy'? Some really cruel parent perhaps. But I don't know, when you're a kid you never think to think otherwise as far as cartoons are concerned. Cartoon Land defies all general logic really, yet we generally accept whatever the cartoon creators throw at us. Even when you start getting a bit older and questioning the world around you, it still seems sacriledge to even dare to ask how 25 years after his televised debut, Bart Simpson is still only ten years old.
So I set about seeing what other characters had secret/other names. Most of them came off Wikipedia so I apologise if I fall victim to the Wikipedia curse but it makes for good reading anyway. I did cross reference where possible with IMDB or official websites/books.
1. Shaggy, Scooby Doo
So starting with the catalyst for this post. Remember me saying you'd have to be a cruel parent to call your kidd Shaggy? Shaggy's non-existant parents were even crueller. Norville Rogers. Wow. Bet he was popular in the playground.
2. Superintendent Chalmers, The Simpsons
School teachers suffer a similar fate to cartoon characters, in that, it's the biggest shock to their students that they have a first name (as well as a life, families, hobbies etc.). Here I combine the two. Superintendent Chalmers first name is apparently Gary. Nice and normal.
3. Stewie Griffin, Family Guy
Occasionally creators will really push the boat out and give their cartoons a middle name as well. Won't surprise anyone that Stewie's real name is Stewart. You may be surprised however to discover that is middle name is Gilligan. Compared with Peter's middle name (Löwenbräu) Gilligan's quite tame!
4. Comic Book Guy, The Simpsons
Again, this is a great example of cartoon logic. Why does the nation, especially adults, accept someone that goes by the name of Comic Book Guy without batting a yellow eyelid? In case you've ever wondered, Jeff Albertson.
5. Captain Scarlet
Stands to reason that a secret agent would have another name. Occasionally we do get to see glimpses of Captain Scarlet's personal life, or life outside of Spectrum. His non-agent name is Paul Metcalfe. His partner and close friend Captain Blue is Adam Svenson.
