"It's lovely to get a laugh. It's the best thing in the world." Richard Briers
Another day, another part of my childhood vanishes. As you get older (and I'm only 25) you become so much more aware of how life is so incredibly short. People that were once very prominent in your lives suddenly aren't there any more.
We didn't have much money at home when we were little and so things like Sky were out of the question. You get used to terrestrial television and one of the few things we liked to watch together as a family was The Good Life. It was so CLEANLY funny, with odds bits of slightly smutty innuendo for the grown ups that only they would get. Something for everyone. And it felt so easy to relate to. Ok, granted, I don't know anybody who quit a high flying job to go self-sufficient (and neither does anyone else probably), but the whole 'making do' thing. I think a lot of families know what that's like. It's not something that goes outdated either. However many generations down the line, there are always going to be Margo & Jerrys, with Tom & Barbaras right next door, trying to make do. Hanging on by the skin of their teeth.
Richard Briers was brilliant as Tom Good. You felt every ounce of frustration. You laughed when he did. His cheeky giggle was so infectious. The show was loved so much and it gets repeated so often yet you never get sick of seeing it. I think, as an actor, that must be a legacy to be really proud of.
